Tutoring and project based learning

Some pupils need a different route back into learning — one that feels achievable, meaningful, and safe. This AP pathway uses flexible tutoring and hands‑on, interest‑based projects to rebuild confidence, curiosity, and engagement.
We can deliver 1:1 or small group sessions depending on needs and abilities. This includes:
-
Delivered in school
-
2‑hour sessions (10–12 or 1–3)
-
Can be blended with Forest School AP
-
Brief summary of the session after each session
Who this is for
This pathway supports pupils who:
-
are disengaged or anxious about learning
-
have gaps in knowledge
-
struggle with traditional teaching
-
need confidence before returning to class
-
benefit from low‑demand, high‑support approaches
-
are on part‑time timetables
These sessions are usually 1:1, however can be extended to include small groups.
Why tutoring and project based learning works
-
builds confidence and self‑belief
-
reduces pressure and overwhelm
-
makes learning meaningful
-
often includes 'secret learning' where pupils do not realise how and where this links to mainstream lessons and the national curriculum
-
supports regulation and engagement
-
helps pupils transition back into class
What sessions may look like
Sessions will be semi structured - ie we will plan and have a topic in mind with outcomes and learning goals that will be discussed with school prior to sessions starting. If a child has different needs on that day, then we can change direction quickly to meet the needs of the child.
Activities may include:
-
hands‑on science and practical investigations
-
curriculum‑linked projects
-
literacy and numeracy through real‑world tasks
-
interest‑based learning
-
executive function support (organisation, planning, focus)
-
gentle reintroduction to classroom expectations
-
The aim is always to help pupils feel capable, successful, and ready to learn again.
