Cognitive Abilities Profile

A collaborative, strengths‑based assessment to understand how a pupil learns
The Cognitive Abilities Profile (CAP) is a dynamic assessment tool that explores how a pupil learns, processes information, and responds to different types of support. It is ideal for pupils with complex or unclear needs.
It can help us understand:
-
cognitive strengths and barriers
-
learning behaviours
-
executive function skills
-
problem‑solving approaches
-
emotional and regulation needs
-
what types of support are most effective
Who CAP Is For
-
pupils with ASD/ADHD
-
pupils with SEMH needs
-
pupils with inconsistent progress
-
pupils with unclear learning profiles
-
pupils at risk of exclusion
-
pupils with anxiety or school avoidance
We can complete a cognitive abilities profile which then better informs which interventions are needed to support pupils.
What the CAP Process Includes
-
consultation with SENCO / staff
-
document review of any previous reports, in school testing, behaviour logs and records.
-
observation and/or direct work with the pupil
-
completion of the CAP framework
-
collaborative meeting with staff and/or parents
-
full written report with practical recommendations
The Cognitive Abilities Profile (CAP) helps schools move beyond “what” a pupil can or can’t do and instead understand how they learn. It explores the pupil’s thinking processes, learning behaviours, regulation needs, and responses to different types of support. This gives schools a clear picture of the underlying reasons a pupil may be struggling, masking, or showing inconsistent progress — especially when needs are complex or not fully explained by previous assessments.
A CAP assessment leads directly to practical, classroom‑ready strategies that staff can use immediately. It strengthens the Graduated Response, supports SEN Support and EHCP reviews, and brings together the pupil, school, and family in a shared understanding of what helps the child thrive. Schools choose CAP because it provides clarity, direction, and meaningful next steps that make a real difference to day‑to‑day practice.
