Forest school - alternative provision

Some pupils need movement, sensory input, and connection with nature before they can re‑engage with classroom learning. Forest School AP provides a safe, relational, low‑demand environment where pupils can regulate, build confidence, and reconnect with learning at their own pace.
We can deliver 1:1 or small group support on the school's own site which includes:
-
All equipment provided
-
Risk assessments included
-
2‑hour sessions (10–12pm or 1–3pm)
-
Can be blended with indoor project‑based learning
Who This Is For
Forest School AP is ideal for pupils who:
-
struggle indoors or with classroom expectations
-
experience anxiety or school‑based avoidance
-
have ASD/ADHD profiles with sensory needs
-
have SEMH needs or trauma histories
-
are on part‑time timetables
-
need relational safety before academic work
These sessions can be run as 1:1 for direct work with children, or as small groups of children with similar profiles that would work well together.
Why Outdoor AP Works
-
reduces stress and overwhelm
-
supports sensory regulation
-
builds confidence and resilience
-
allows for learning in an environment pupils feel calm
-
allows for 'secret learning' often pupils do not realise that what they are learning links to the curriculum
-
strengthens social communication
-
creates emotional safety
-
helps pupils transition back into learning
What Sessions Look Like
Sessions will be semi structured - ie we will plan and have a topic in mind with outcomes and learning goals that will be discussed with school prior to sessions starting. If a child has different needs on that day, then we can change direction quickly to meet the needs of the child.
Activities may include:
-
fire lighting and outdoor cooking
-
tool use
-
nature crafts
-
shelter building
-
team challenges
-
sensory regulation activities
-
mindfulness and grounding
-
curriculum‑linked outdoor learning
Sessions are always relational, strengths‑based, and paced to the child’s needs. For more information of for a discussion on how this could work, please contact Jo.
